Mosquitoes

On the last day of class before SPRING BREAK (aw...its almost over, or practically already over), we watched a movie called Mosquito Coast. The movie was about a man and his family who go to...actually I forgot where they go. But they go somewhere and the man is an inventor. So, he creates different inventions that make up this whole city. It has ice and air conditioning in this place that's detached from the modern world. But then there comes trouble and other stuff. Basically, it's kind of like the book that we're reading in class, The Poisonwood Bible.
In both the movie and the book the father is sort of controlling over the family. Whatever he says, goes. No questions asked. The fathers also want to create and change these places that they live and make it home, whether by inventing or preaching. Most of the people in their families want to support them, but things that they do and how they are so controlling prevents that. The mothers secretly, or not that secretly, are against almost everything that their husbands do. They want to return to their old homes and they want their husbands to think about the family and not what he wants for them but what they need. One of the children in both stories want to be with the father in everything that he does but they also share feelings that the rest of the family have. The other children want to return home but they don't speak up because, I'm sure they aren't but, the fathers are crazy. Yup. Oh, and both stories take place in areas that are really far away from civilization.
Also, SPRING BREAK is already almost over. This is really sad. But, "you have to have the bad to have the good". I heard that, or something like it, somewhere. Have a great day.

Poisonwood Bible The Revelation

The Revelation is the second part of the book The Poisonwood Bible. Many things happen in this section. My job, being the new critic, I found a couple of sections where they seem to hold a sort of significance to the story. Or some may be that I found them to be just interesting. The first event that sort of mattered was when Ruth May broke her arm. After climbing in the tree and spying on the Jimmy Crow boys, she falls and breaks it. She ends up having to have to fly to a hospital where a doctor starts to diss the Lord right to the father's face. This is the start of where people tell the father about how there are other ministers in the town and that the people don't want Christianity as their religion. They already have a religion and God to rely on. The second event is when Adah supposedly gets eaten by a lion and comes back to life. She is walking back from the stream alone, close to night. A lion follows her but she returns home safely. The chief of the town proudly reports to father that a lion had eaten and killed Adah. But then Adah walks out to where everyone can see her. This causes a boost of the number of people who attend service because they thinks that the Lord had saved her from the lion. And it goes on with a story from the bible about how she had been saved. This makes the father happier. Good thing Adah didn't die, I like her. The third thing was when Anatole sent a boy to live with them and to help them with chores in return of food and shelter, among other small arrangements. The boy's name is Nelson. This just adds a new character to the story. Then the Underdowns go to visit them. Or, more like they go to tell them that the Congolese are going to be an independent nation and they should leave. But father decides not to leave and so everyone is sad.
That's about all I got.

Me, Ruth May

There were so many big kids around this school. They were as big as Rachel and Leah and Adah. They are all sinners because they wear their pants too low and don't wear enough clothes, especially the girls. It's like they want to bring attention to themselves. If father had the time, he would give them all a good spanking, just to knock some sense into them. Rachel says they dress like that because of Style. Who is this Style? Shouldn't they be listening to God instead? The bible says to ask for forgiveness and you will be forgiven. They don't even know that they are sinning. Maybe someone should tell them. Father said to pray so I wouldn't be like them. Maybe I should pray for them too, so they wouldn't all burn in hell. That would be a really big fire. At least it would remind them of the hotness of Hawaii.

I hope this was Ruth May-ish enough. I tried to be kinda random and "quote" the father and the bible a lot.

Yellow Shoelaces

Life changes a lot through the years. Or even through minutes or seconds of your life. A lot has been going on in my life. Not like I'm saying that they are bad things, just a lot of things. I've gotten closer to some of my friends which is quite good. That's essential to life. There have also been other things, but ya. I guess everything happens for a reason, for a lesson to be learned, a tear to be shed, a moment to be remembered, or a smile to be shared. My friends are great. I really love them. They're just...I don't know. They make things alright. :]

Poisonwood Bible Genesis-2

This is kind of like a follow-up to my previous post.

My favorite character so far in The Poisonwood Bible is Adah. I'm sure there are others who agree with me, or not. Adah is the twin who is brain dead in half of her brain. The way she talks and how she says and describes life is just so...original. It's seems real. She seems like she's the most rebellious out of the four children. Sometimes we find her dissing God in a subtle way. It seems like she thinks that God doesn't think as highly of her as her other sisters and He doesn't love her as much because he made her half brain dead. Because she can't live up to every one's expectations, because of how they see her as someone who can't talk, she lives in her own life and finds ways to please herself. She puts on the expression of not caring what people think, but she actually does. She doesn't want to be a nobody. Explaining things that people don't see and the bad things that make them are ways to get around feeling that they are better than her. It makes her feel better about herself when putting them down. The things that she focuses on could also be a way for her to lose herself while being trapped in her life. She likes to see things backwards, like when she reads or makes up her own hymns. Perhaps this is a way for her to feel better than the others or a way for her to express how she wish things were, the opposite. She doesn't want to be half brain dead. She doesn't want to be the outcast. Maybe that's why she likes Congo more than the others, because its closer than she's been to herself than before. There's still much more to learn about and by her.

Poisonwood Bible Genesis-1

This book is called The Poisonwood Bible. It is about a family who goes to Congo to preach to the people there. We are soon to have a lit circle meeting about the first part of the book called Genesis. I chose the job of Psychological Critic. In this job I will analyze why the characters did what they did and see what their thoughts were behind their actions. There are many things I can analyze in this short section of the book. First of all, the motives that are behind the characters' actions will always be connected to who they are and what they believe. Their personality and what surrounds them will have a connection.
The Price family move to Congo because the father is a preacher and wants to convert the Congolese into Christians. I don't really know what I have to do. There are just so many things that I can talk about and brainstorm about the motive for it. All of the characters have different personalities, thus different reasons for their actions. Leah is one of the twins. She seems as though she is one of the more main characters. She tries to tell things the way they actually are, because, I don't know. She's just a regular person/child. She is very into the Christian things along with her father. There is also Ruth May. She is the youngest child who tries to be all that she can for her father. To be the perfect child under God. She tells things like how she sees them, not how they really are. She sees things and turns them into her own thoughts of them. Like a typical child, she sometimes pays attention to the less important things. Rachel is the oldest child. She's basically a prissy teenager who wants everything her way and needs it or else she'll have some sort of drama. Things revolve around her. She sees things only her way and thinks that everything around her has to be her way or else its bad/wrong. She only brings attention to things that have to do something with her. Adah is the other twin. She's supposedly brain dead. Everyone thinks that she's basically useless but she proves otherwise. She has her own world and life to live. No one really pays attention to her because she can't talk and has a limp, and that's why she's so lyrical and descriptive of everything she sees around her. She's got the time and space to notice things that others wouldn't usually see. She knows that her family thinks she's retarded or slow but she doesn't really care. It's her life and she lives it how she likes. The mother, I've still got to figure out. I don't know about her. The father basically wants to shout God's word and save the Congolese people from themselves. And he's doing everything in his power to do just that, although its not leading to anywhere.

How was your day?

So, really, how was your day? Hope it was good. I know this idea is overly used but I want to say this. We really should enjoy life, even though we may all decide that it sucks. We should somehow find a way to pick out the needle of good from the hay pile of life. We should cherish that good like it was all we have, and really it is kind of like all we have to look forward to in our days on this earth. Laugh at everything that you find stupid or funny or just anything you want, don't hold back. Hug those you love, because you know that they deserve it every second you share with them. Eat junky food and don't feel bad about it. Lie on you back in the grass and look at the clouds. Enjoy the trees around you and the life they give. Spend money on yourself once in a while, it is your money after all and you could probably find a reason to reward yourself. Sleep in on the weekends, that's why they're called weekends. Create a masterpiece with finger paints, I know you want to. Blast you stereo and sing along, or shouting works too. Have movie nights, or days, with your friends with endless supplies of junk food, you can be couch potatoes together. Bake cakes and give them to your friends to celebrate your friendship, then stuff your mouth. Buy pinatas and hang it up on a tree then have fun taking whacks at it, with your friends of course, don't forget to eat all of the candy on that day. The list goes on and on and on. So just live life. Go for it.
